01

Is teeth whitening right for you?

Whitening lightens the natural colour of your teeth. It works best on yellowish staining from coffee, tea, red wine, smoking and ageing. Greyish discolouration, such as staining from some medications or a tooth that darkened after an injury, usually responds less and may need a different approach. Before whitening, we check for decay, gum disease, cracked teeth and leaking fillings, because whitening gel on an untreated problem can cause discomfort. If something needs treating first, we'll tell you and plan it before you whiten.

Two ways to whiten: in-chair and take-home

In-chair whitening Done at the studio in one appointment of about 90 minutes, using a professional in-chair whitening system. We protect your gums, apply a professional whitening gel and monitor you throughout. It suits people who want a visible change in a single visit. Take-home whitening trays We take a 3D digital scan of your teeth (no moulds) and make trays that fit your mouth. You wear them at home with a professional-strength gel, following a schedule we set out for you. The change is gradual, you control the pace, and you keep the trays for top-ups later. Which one suits you? Some people prefer take-home trays for comfort and control; others choose in-chair for speed, and some combine the two. We'll recommend an option at your assessment, based on your teeth, any sensitivity, and how quickly you'd like to see a change.

We explain which option suits you, what result is realistic for your teeth, and the cost in writing. 3. Treatment. In-chair whitening at the studio, or we scan for your take-home trays and show you how to use them. 4. Review. We check your result and any sensitivity, and talk about how to keep your new shade.

What whitening can and can't change

Whitening changes the colour of natural tooth enamel only. Fillings, crowns, veneers and bonding keep their shade, so if you have restorations on your front teeth, they may need replacing afterwards to match. How much lighter your teeth become varies from person to person and can't be guaranteed. If whitening won't give you the change you're after, veneers or bonding may be worth discussing. See our guide to porcelain and composite veneers.

Sensitivity and other risks

Temporary tooth sensitivity is the most common side effect and usually eases within a few days of stopping. Some people notice gum irritation where the gel touches the gums. We reduce both by protecting your gums, using desensitising products, and adjusting how long and how often you whiten. Let us know if you've had sensitivity before. Whitening may not suit you if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have untreated decay or gum disease, or have very sensitive teeth. We'll talk through the alternatives at your assessment.

Keeping your results

Whitening doesn't last forever. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking gradually re-stain teeth, so your shade will change over time. Regular check-ups and cleans help, and take-home trays can be used for occasional top-ups as we advise.

Cost and health funds

The cost depends on the option you choose and whether any treatment is needed first. You'll receive a written quote after your assessment, before anything is booked. Some health funds pay part of the cost of professional whitening, depending on your level of extras cover, and your check-up and clean beforehand may also be claimable. We'll include the item numbers with your quote so you can check your rebate.

Teeth whitening FAQs

How long does teeth whitening last? It varies from person to person. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking re-stain teeth faster. Many people use take-home trays for occasional top-ups to keep their shade.

Can I whiten my teeth if they're sensitive? Often, yes. We find out why your teeth are sensitive and treat any cause first. We may suggest take-home trays with a gentler gel and a desensitising toothpaste before you start.

Does teeth whitening hurt? Whitening isn't painful, but temporary sensitivity is common and usually settles within a few days. We use desensitising products and can adjust your treatment if it happens.

Does my health fund cover teeth whitening? It depends on your fund and level of cover. Some extras policies pay part of the cost of professional whitening, while others don't contribute. Your check-up and clean beforehand may also be claimable. We'll include the item numbers with your written quote so you can check your rebate with your fund before you book.

Will whitening change the colour of my fillings or veneers? No. Whitening only lightens natural teeth. Fillings, crowns, veneers and bonding keep their colour, so front-tooth restorations may need replacing afterwards to match.

Is professional whitening different from supermarket kits? Yes. Professional whitening uses stronger gels than products sold over the counter, a dentist checks your teeth first, and take-home trays are made to fit your mouth, which keeps gel off your gums.
