What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant has three parts: the implant itself, a small post (usually titanium) placed in the jawbone; an abutment, which connects the implant to the tooth above the gum; and the crown, the visible tooth, made to match your other teeth.
Over the months after placement, the bone normally bonds to the surface of the implant. This is called osseointegration, and it is what allows the implant to support a tooth. Implants can replace a single tooth, support a bridge across several missing teeth, or
anchor a full arch of teeth.

When is a Dental Implant worth considering?
An implant is one of three common ways to replace a missing tooth, alongside a bridge and a denture, and leaving the gap is sometimes a reasonable option too. An implant may suit you if:
• you're missing one or more teeth and want a fixed replacement rather than a removable one
• the teeth either side of the gap are healthy, and you'd rather not have them prepared for a bridge
• you have, or can have, enough bone to support an implant
• your gums are healthy and you can keep the area clean
An implant may not be the right first choice if you have untreated gum disease, poorly controlled diabetes, smoke heavily, or take certain medications that affect bone healing. These don't always rule implants out, but they change the risks, and we'll talk them through with you honestly.

What does the process involve?
Step 1 — Assessment and planning
A consultation, an examination, and a CBCT scan to see the bone, nerves and sinuses in 3D. You receive a written, itemised treatment plan and time to think it over.
Step 2 — Preparation, if needed
Some people need a tooth removed, gum disease treated or a bone graft before an implant can be placed.
Step 3 — Placing the implant
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Tenderness and some swelling for a few days afterwards are common, and are usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
Step 4 — Healing
Usually around two to four months while the implant bonds with the bone, and sometimes longer if grafting was needed. A temporary tooth can often be worn in the meantime.
Step 5 — Your final crown
Once the implant has integrated, a digital scan is taken and your crown is made and fitted.
Step 6 — Looking after it
Implants need cleaning like natural teeth, plus regular check-ups so the gum and bone around them can be monitored.
For a straightforward single implant, the time from placement to final crown is typically around three to six months. If a tooth needs removing or bone needs grafting first, it can take longer. Your written plan sets out the expected timeline for your case.

Who plans and places your implant
Your implant treatment is planned and carried out by Dr Anthony Vinci. Dr Vinci graduated in dentistry from the University of Adelaide, has completed postgraduate implant training through gIDE, and is licensed to capture and assess CBCT (3D cone-beam) scans, the imaging that implant planning relies on.
Planning happens here, in our Campbelltown studio: a CBCT scan to assess the bone and nearby structures, a digital intraoral scan in place of impression trays, and a written treatment plan before anything is booked. We use established implant systems, including Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Neoss and MIS. Some cases are best managed as a team, particularly full-arch
treatment or cases that need significant bone or gum grafting. For those, we work alongside a specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a specialist periodontist, and we'll explain who does what before treatment begins.

Full-arch implants
If you're missing most or all of your teeth in one jaw, or your remaining teeth can't be saved, full-arch treatment uses a small number of implants to support a fixed set of teeth across the whole arch. It is a significant procedure that suits some people and not others. We plan full-arch cases in-house and, where a case calls for it, together with a specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon or a specialist periodontist.

Dental implant FAQs
Q: How long do dental implants last? A: There's no fixed lifespan. With good home care and regular check-ups, many implants last for decades, but they are not guaranteed for life. Smoking, gum disease, teeth grinding and some medical conditions shorten their life expectancy. The crown on top may need replacing over time, as any crown can.
Q: Is an implant better than a bridge? A: Neither is better in every case. An implant doesn't involve preparing the neighbouring teeth, but it needs a surgical procedure and healing time. Q: Does getting a dental implant hurt? A: The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure. Q: Am I too old for a dental implant? A: Age on its own isn't usually the deciding factor. What matters more is your general health, the bone and gums where the implant would go, and any medications you take. Many older adults have implants, and we'll assess whether they're suitable for you.
Q: Do I need a bone graft before a dental implant? A: Not always. If there isn't enough bone to support an implant, often because a tooth has been missing for some time, a bone graft may be needed first, or at the same time as the implant is placed. The CBCT scan at your assessment shows whether grafting is likely. Grafting adds time and cost, and both are set out in your written plan before you decide.
Q: What happens if I don't replace a missing tooth? A: Sometimes not much, particularly for a back tooth that isn't needed for chewing. Over time, though, neighbouring teeth can drift or tip into the gap, the opposing tooth can over-erupt, and the bone where the tooth was gradually shrinks, which can make an implant harder to place later. We'll tell you honestly whether replacing the tooth is worthwhile in your case.
